New information is surfacing about Sean Monahan
Kent Hughes pulled off a real masterstroke last summer by acquiring Sean Monahan and a first-round pick for future considerations. Unfortunately, the Canadiens' forward suffered a nasty injury that ended his season, preventing the general manager from trading him at the trade deadline to optimize Monahan's value.
However, when he's healthy, the 28-year-old forward has proven he can contribute significantly to a team's success. Indeed, Monahan scored 6 goals and 11 assists in 25 games at the start of the season. He was notably among the best players on the Canadiens before he got injured.
Knowing that he will most likely have to accept a one-year deal at a very reasonable salary this summer, as he will want to prove that he is fully recovered from his injury, Kent Hughes might be tempted to bring him back to Montreal next year.
After all, if the Canadiens' general manager grants him a one-year contract for 2 million dollars, the risk would be virtually non-existent for the organization. Additionally, he could be a very interesting option to support Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Kirby Dach in the top-6 of the Montreal lineup.
Moreover, if Sean Monahan manages to avoid injuries and produce offensively, he would undoubtedly become a highly sought-after option at the trade deadline. Kent Hughes could then trade him to a team aiming for major honors in order to receive draft picks or young prospects.
In this regard, the excellent Chris Johnston mentioned that he would not be surprised to see Monahan in a Canadiens uniform next year and that there had probably been discussions about this possibility.
