Patrick Guillet believes that time is running out for the Canadiens' newcomer, Joe Veleno, despite all his talent and obvious potential.
In a message posted on social media, the analyst explained that, in his opinion, Veleno has not yet proven that he deserves a permanent spot in Martin St-Louis's lineup.
"I see a lot of people getting excited about Joe Veleno's arrival in the lineup.
Veleno took advantage of injuries to
Patrik Laine and
Kirby Dach to finally be inserted into the Canadiens' lineup last Saturday against the Rangers.
He wasn't very impressive and was only used for 9:44, which is less than Patrik Laine. Was he rusty? Possibly. But the fact remains that the coach didn't use him much in the third period, despite the forward having excellent offensive instincts."

According to him, even though Veleno has good instincts in the offensive zone, the fact that St-Louis used him very little in the third period might suggest a lack of confidence from the coach.
Patrick Guillet Sends a Clear Message: He Needs to Stand Out Quickly
He points out that Joe Veleno, at just 25 years old, is already with his fourth NHL team - a statistic that speaks for itself. It's a fair point.
"His talent is obvious during practices, but he also has that "je ne sais quoi" that prevents coaches from using him regularly during games."
For Guillet, the issue is simple... Veleno needs to quickly find what makes him unique and forces St-Louis to keep him in the lineup.
"Otherwise his years in the NHL will soon be over." - Patrick Guillet
In my opinion, I understand the point of view, but I don't fully agree.
Yes, it's clear that Veleno needs to prove himself, but I truly believe he's shown promising things right from his first shifts.
I've seen good speed, discipline, and hockey sense that fits well with the Canadiens' identity.
If he continues to progress, he could still prove his critics wrong.
