While the rumors were mostly coming from Montreal journalists, that has now changed. It's coming from all over the NHL, even from Tampa Bay and the Sportsnet network.
Indeed, Montreal is one of the four most likely destinations if Stamkos doesn't re-sign with the Bolts. Jon Cooper expects to see him back, but to be honest, Stammer is still worth a pretty penny, and the team doesn't have much salary cap space. It will be difficult.
Among the four mentioned teams, the Canadiens seem like a good fit, as they have the means to pay him and he would join Martin St-Louis, Vincent Lecavalier, and Kent Hughes.
Moreover, Stamkos has always dreamed of playing for one of the Original Six teams. That's promising!
Steven Stamkos has had seasons of 106, 84, and 81 points in the last three years. He's still capable of being very productive and is a true weapon on the power play.
He's also an excellent leader, something he learned alongside Martin St-Louis and Vincent Lecavalier. And to top it off, he's lifted the Stanley Cup twice, so he won't necessarily be looking for a contender.
It all depends on whether he signs a new deal with the Lightning. As July 1st approaches, the rumors will only intensify.
