Major turn of events involving Matvei Michkov and SKA St. Petersburg
The Montreal Canadiens have finally released their much-anticipated documentary on the behind-the-scenes of the 2023 draft. In this video, we noticed that Jeff Gorton seemed genuinely interested in selecting Russian prospect Matvei Michkov. However, unlike the Vice President of Hockey Operations, all of the scouts preferred defenseman David Reinbacher.
While Michkov's talent is undeniable, several factors seemed to work against him when the Canadiens' top brass made their final decision. In this regard, the development of the young forward, who is under contract with SKA St. Petersburg, was a concern for the organization. This is entirely understandable, given that the Flyers are now at the mercy of the decisions made by SKA's coach.
Being one of the top teams in the KHL, the team primarily wants to win and not focus on the development of certain young players. We had a concrete example recently when, during the last three grames of the preseason schedule, Matvei Michkov only played thirteen minutes and was even left out of the last game.
Furthermore, things do not seem to be improving for the 7th overall pick in the 2023 draft, who did not participate in the first game of the season today. Such a decision could really hurt his development.
Let's just say that Flyers fans must be concerned at the moment.
"I just saw this, but Matvei Michkov seems to have been scratched from SKA's opening game lineup. Ivan Demidov (2024) is, however, in uniform and playing on the 4th line. This comes after Michkov was scratched during the preseason. Is the chess game beginning? Hold on, Flyers fans." - Marco D'Amico Could Matvei Michkov be loaned to another KHL team, as it happened last season? One thing is for sure; if the Flyers' prospect is unable to get quality minutes in the coming weeks, a loan would undoubtedly be great way for him to continue his development adequately.
