Now, Kent Hughes can focus on Samuel Montembeault's contract extension.
In this regard, Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson has just signed a new contract that will likely serve as a comparison point in negotiations between the Canadiens' general manager and Montembeault's agent.
The 25-year-old Swedish goaltender has put pen to paper on a three-year contract worth an annual value of 3.75 million dollars. Although he has only played 66 NHL games, 37 fewer than the Canadiens' goaltender, Gustavsson recorded an impressive 22-9-7 record this season, maintaining an excellent goals-against average of 2.10 and an outstanding save percentage of 0.910.
Gustavsson's impressive statistics could provide a compelling argument for Kent Hughes in his discussions with Samuel Montembeault, potentially leading to a slightly less lucrative contract. Do you believe a three-season contract extension at an annual salary around three million dollars would be justified for him?
After all, the Canadiens' number 35 finished the year with very impressive numbers, considering the fact that Montreal had one of the worst defenses in the league. Montembeault kept his team in the game on numerous occasions throughout the season, posting a save percentage of 0.901 in 40 games.
Also, he was simply incredible for Team Canada during the Hockey World Championship this summer, winning six out of the seven games he played. One thing is certain, Samuel Montembeault demonstrated significant progress in the 2022-2023 season, and we are eager to witness the performances he will deliver for the Canadiens next year. Considering he is potentially the future number one goaltender for the organization, a three-year, 9-million-dollar contract seems legitimate.
