Some journalists have suggested that the Habs may try to sign a free agent this summer to accelerate the team's progress.
According to Marc Dumont of Montreal Hockey Now, GM Kent Hughes should offer a contract to New Jersey Devils defenseman Damon Severson. He would be a significant addition to the young defensive corps of the Canadiens and could undoubtedly fill a role on the team's top two pairings.
The 28-year-old defenseman has amassed 79 points in the last two seasons and has been an integral part of the Devils' success this year, playing a key role on the team's second power play unit.
However, even if the Canadiens are interested in acquiring his services, Damon Severson may wish to remain in New Jersey. The Devils finally have a team that can compete with the majority of NHL clubs, and the idea of joining a rebuilding organization could work against the Habs.
However, if Tom Fitzgerald does not plan to re-sign the defenseman for the upcoming season, Kent Hughes may be tempted to offer him a contract at the opening of free agency.
