Exceptional turnaround with yesterday's transaction: Kent Hughes managed the impossible with Carey Price's contract and the LTIR
We learned in recent weeks, during a press conference by Kent Hughes, that the Canadiens' General Manager wished to start the season with Carey Price's massive $10.5 million contract in the team's lineup.
The goal of this exercise is to place his contract on the in-season LTIR, rather than the off-season LTIR. By doing this, the organization would have much more financial flexibility, which would provide a valuable asset for the Canadiens for the upcoming season in terms of potential trades.
Following yesterday's transaction, where the Canadiens acquired forward Tanner Pearson and his $3.25 million contract, many believed this had thwarted the Canadiens' plan to place Price on the in-season LTIR.
According to insider Frank Seravalli, the answer to that question is no. Hughes can still start the season with Price's contract in his regular lineup, which is a very interesting turnaround.
«And in case you were wondering, the Habs have plenty of wiggle room - they won't need to place Carey Price on off-season LTIR for this transaction to work.»
- Frank Seravalli
Hughes and his assistant John Sedgwick, who is in charge of managing the Canadiens' salary cap, pulled off quite a magic trick to make this work despite adding Pearson's contract.
We truly admire all the work of the Tricolore's management!
