Unfortunately, since his arrival in the NHL, the Quebecer has struggled offensively, never reaching the 40-point mark in a single season. However, many observers were optimistic about the upcoming season, as he would have the chance to play under a new head coach, Peter Laviolette.
To the dismay of New York fans, things continue to worsen for the 21-year-old. Despite being given opportunities to play on the top line and on the power play during preseason games, Laffy simply cannot find his way offensively.
Moreover, journalist Brennan Klak, known for his precise analyses, mentioned that head coach Peter Laviolette seemed to have no solution to help the Quebecer bounce back. He also suggested the Rangers might consider trading him if his struggles continue into the regular season.
It's really concerning to see Lafrenière struggle this much, once perceived as a future NHL star. However, he's only 21 years old and undoubtedly has immense talent; could a change of scenery help him find his offensive touch?
One thing's for sure, even though he signed a two-year contract extension, his future in New York is increasingly uncertain. It remains to be seen if a general manager still believes in his high potential and is willing to pay a high price for his services.
Even though he embodies the type of player sought by the Tricolore's top brass, it's hard to see how Kent Hughes would agree to give up a Kaiden Guhle, a Logan Mailloux, or even a Lane Hutson to get a forward who hasn't yet proven he can take on a leading role.
We sincerely hope that Lafrenière will be able to revive his career and have a good season this year, but so far, everything indicates that the left winger from Saint-Eustache might have difficulties scoring on a regular basis.
