Kent Hughes just dropped some serious hints about the Montreal Canadiens' future 5th pick
The puck has dropped, the NHL lottery is now in the rearview, and we now have the final line-up for the top 16 selections of the 2023 draft.
Unfortunately for the Canadiens and its fans, the team did not have the luck to win the Connor Bedard lottery, and the organization did not manage to secure the second overall pick either.
At least for the Tricolore, the best of the worst-case scenarios has occurred, meaning the club will pick at the 5th position, rather than slipping to the 6th or 7th spot.
The top 5 of this draft is simply incredible, with Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Leo Carlsson, Matvei Michkov, and Will Smith clearly forming a group of their own.
Regarding the potential pick that the Canadiens will make with this 5th choice, while being interviewed on TVA Sports, Kent Hughes made a very interesting statement.
According to the Canadiens' General Manager, we can possibly expect to see one of these players, depending on how the draft unfolds, land in Montreal.
Kent Hughes stated that the Montreal Canadiens will choose the best player available, regardless of rumors, especially those concerning Michkov.
Although risky, Hughes asserts that if he is the best player, there are discussions among the leaders. He also adds that knowing Will Smith is an advantage, as he knows he is a very good person, but the decision must be made with the entire management team.
In conclusion, Hughes also stated that trading the 5th overall pick is unlikely but not impossible, although it is a very slim option.
