For the past few weeks, the name of the Russian defenseman Bogdan Konyushkov has been consistently appearing in Montreal media. Many experts have stated that the Canadiens truly hit a home run by selecting the 20-year-old in the fourth round this summer.
Fueling the fans' enthusiasm, the 110th overall pick in 2023 has just been named the KHL's defenseman of the week, having accumulated four points in three games. Clearly, Konyshukov is far from having reached his peak and is improving game by game.
"Bogdan Konyushkov named defenseman of the week in the KHL, with 4 points in 3 games.
Truly impressive to see him stand out this way, at 20 years old in one of the world's top leagues." - Podcast La Relève
This bodes very well for what's to come!
Additionally, the head coach of Torpedo, Igor Larionov, places complete trust in him and doesn't hesitate to use him in various situations, which is undoubtedly very promising for his development. In fact, Bogdan Konyushkov is currently the most-played defenseman in the entire KHL, averaging over 24 minutes per game.
All signs suggest that the Canadiens' front office may have truly hit a home run with this pick. It wouldn't be surprising if the defenseman shakes up the team's roster in a few seasons, potentially forcing Kent Hughes to trade one of the many young defensemen in the lineup at that time.
After an excellent season with 25 points in 64 games, Konyushkov seems increasingly capable of contributing offensively, having already amassed one goal and five assists (six points) in just nine games this season.
The future looks very promising for the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge!
