Due to his recent performances, many fans have wondered if Samuel Montembeault could be the much-sought-after number one goalie by the organization. It is difficult to say whether or not the 26-year-old goalie will be able to become a top goaltender in the NHL, but one thing is certain, his progress is notable over the last few years.
Montembeault is entering the final year of his two-year contract worth two million dollars. It would be highly beneficial for the Tricolore to offer him a contract extension now, because if the goalie has another good season in 2023-2024, his value will only increase.
During his appearance on BPM Sports, the goalie stated that he would very much like to sign a new agreement before the start of the next season, as it was notably the case with Jake Allen last year. Of course, he does not expect Kent Hughes to contact him as of July 1st, but he would be very happy to have a new contract in hand so that he can fully focus on his performances on the ice.
In addition, the former Canadiens goaltending coach, Stéphane Waite, commented on Montembeault's contract situation, stating that he would not hesitate to give him a three-year contract extension worth around 2.5 to 3 million dollars per year.
Do you believe that the Canadiens should have him sign a new agreement before the start of the season?
