New information is emerging about Joel Edmundson's future with the Canadiens
For the past few days, there have been several rumors suggesting that Joel Edmundson might have played his last game with the Canadiens. Given that the veteran will be playing out the final year of his contract (worth $3.5 million) and that the organization is filled with young defenders, it would not be surprising to see Kent Hughes trade the defenseman this summer.
Moreover, had it not been for his injury last year, Joel Edmundson would probably have been traded at the deadline as several teams had shown interest in the Tricolor player. According to information reported by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the 29-year-old defenseman has been linked with the Edmonton Oilers, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Seattle Kraken.

Such a transaction could allow the Canadiens to gain additional draft picks and also save $3.5 million on the payroll. The general manager of the Tricolor would therefore have more leeway when the free agent market opens or even to complete a trade soon.
However, while Martin St-Louis' lineup has several young defenders capable of stepping up and playing a more significant role next season, Joel Edmundson's experience and leadership would be a considerable loss for the organization.
It remains to be seen whether Kent Hughes will attempt to trade him in the coming days or if he will wish to keep him on the team so that he can play a mentor role this season.
One thing is certain, this is a file to follow very closely!
