Personally, I find this statement somewhat ironic, given that journalists often criticize athletes for not being loyal to their team and even label them as mercenaries.
Some may wonder why the Penguins would trade Sidney Crosby, considering he has spent so many years playing for the city of Pittsburgh. However, some may consider that since the trade of Wayne Gretzky, no player is safe from being traded.
Personally, I think it would be more loyal to the team and the fans to keep Crosby in Pittsburgh, as the Detroit Red Wings did with Steve Yzerman throughout his career. Indeed, it is rare these days to see an athlete who has played only for their original team.
Indeed, we often expect loyalty and attachment from the players on our team. However, as soon as they start to slow down or not perform as well as before, we tend to want to trade them, as was recently discussed with the case of Brendan Gallagher.
This is a reality of professional sports, where player performance has a significant influence on team decisions, but this should not prevent us from recognizing the loyalty and attachment that some players have for their team.
