During his press conference at the Montreal Canadiens' golf tournament, General Manager Kent Hughes reiterated his desire to trade the 32-year-old netminder, but also admitted that he might find himself in a difficult situation where two contracted goaltenders would be placed on waivers.
Of course, it was suspected that Cayden Primeau would have to go through the waiver process, as he will certainly start the season with the Laval Rocket. However, it is somewhat surprising to find that Casey DeSmith might also be available, and that too, for free, to all the teams in the NHL.
It seems that no NHL team is interested in acquiring the former Pittsburgh Penguins' goaltender at the moment, a situation that could potentially change should there be injuries during the training camp. One thing is for sure, the Canadiens' executive team does not plan to start the year with three goaltenders in their lineup.
Although Kent Hughes promised Casey DeSmith that he would not be sent to the AHL, it seems that things have taken a different turn in recent days. Therefore, the Canadiens might lose two goaltenders just a few days before the start of the season. If that's the case, it is a safe bet that the Canadiens' prospect, Jakub Dobes, will have a prominent role with the Laval Rocket in 2023-2024.
One thing is certain, this will be a situation to closely monitor!
