Even though it is sometimes difficult to find comparable players to give an idea of a prospect's potential, an observer has offered some very interesting names for certain young Habs.
Here is what was presented by this observer:
This is a very exciting overview for Canadiens fans. While comparing players is always a difficult and very imprecise exercise, providing a comparison basis is always appreciated to better understand a prospect's possible potential.
Among the comparables offered by this observer, those for Hutson, Guhle, and Reinbacher seem quite fair.
Hutson doesn't have Hughes' skating, but he has better creativity with the puck. Guhle has a defensive game that can be part of the elite like Slavin, while having the ability to provide more than interesting offense. Reinbacher doesn't have the same robustness as Seider, but he has better stick use to counter opponents' attacks.
I also like the comparison of Ondrej Palat for Joshua Roy. The 19-year-old Quebecer has developed a knack for defensive play, and his on-ice intelligence and excellent shot, despite an ordinary stride, make him a versatile player.
The two comparisons that are less good in my eyes are Matthew Tkachuk for Juraj Slafkovsky and Jeff Petry for Logan Mailloux.
The Canadiens' first pick in 2022 doesn't have the robust side and aggressive playing style of the Panthers' forward. In his case, it's more a Mikko Rantanen who fits a bit more with him. His puck protection and ability to maneuver in tight space resemble more the Finnish player from the Avalanche.
In the case of Mailloux, his devastating wrist and slap shot remind me more of John Carlson of the Capitals. Both have a comparable physique, a similar goal-scoring ability and a very similar skating style. Moreover, like Mailloux, Carlson also had defensive shortcomings in his game, especially at the beginning of his NHL career.
