Personally, I believe Kent Hughes and his team made a mistake by selecting David Reinbacher over Matvei Michkov. I also think most would agree, that this decision will likely be questioned for a long time.
There was also the selection of Florian Xhekaj in the 4th round, along with the three goalkeepers during the same draft session, but the organization was quickly proven right afterwards.
In 2024, the two first round picks will, in my opinion, make the difference for the future of the club. Ivan Demidov will be quite the hockey player in the NHL, and Michael Hage will become a home run hit, according to many.
Former Canadiens scout Grant McCagg believes Hage is ready for the NHL, even if his body needs to develop further. He excels in the NCAA and what stands out the most is his ability to win faceoffs.
Hage could really stand out for the Canadiens at this level, in addition to being a formidable attacker capable of doing big things and producing.
In 6 games in his rookie season in the NCAA, Hage has 4 goals and 3 assists so far. He is clearly demonstrating that he is reliable, in addition to being able to dominate offensively.
The Canadiens made an excellent acquisition with him, and you will really have to keep an eye on him. Kent Hughes could well sign him to his entry level contract this summer.
