As you know, Jonathan Marchessault has agreed to a five-year contract with the Nashville Predators. The Canadiens had approached his agent with a three-year deal, but the annual salary the Quebec native would have earned was unknown.

Meanwhile, the Nashville Predators offered a contract that will earn him an average of $5.5 million per season over five years. At 33 years old, the offer was enticing!

Many Canadiens fans dreamed of seeing Kent Hughes reach an agreement with the Quebecois forward, and as reported by Marqueur, it's not for lack of trying. However, the offer made to Marchessault seems rather ridiculous when you consider the monetary difference between the two offers.

The Canadiens' offer to Jonathan Marchessault revealed

In fact, according to information obtained by Mathieu Paradis of Toutsurlehockey, Hughes offered Marchessault a three-year contract with an annual salary of $4.7 million, which is $800,000 less per season than the Predators' offer. However, the contract's length makes a huge difference here.

Over the course of the deal, Marchessault will earn $27.5 million with a guaranteed salary until he's 38 years old. The Canadiens offered him $14.1 million over three years, just over half of what he'll make with Nashville. Hockey is a business, after all.

In the end, it's not surprising that he chose to join the Predators, who also signed Steven Stamkos and Brady Skjei to long-term deals.

But that's not all!

It's not too bad given the circumstances. According to rumors, his team where he won the Conn Smythe and the Stanley Cup, the Vegas Golden Knights, allegedly made an offer to the player who scored 42 goals with them in 2023-2024, and the amount is grotesque, even insulting to the Quebec native.

Again, according to Mathieu Paradis, Marchessault was offered $1 million per season for several years, with no performance bonuses from the Golden Knights. It's embarrassing if this information is accurate.

"The annual salary was, according to my information, $1 million per year. There was no discussion of bonuses, which indeed makes the concept of this offer quite peculiar."

Excuse me?

The Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 2023 will have the means to achieve his ambitions in Nashville, as they really doubled down during the offseason with major acquisitions.

We'll see if he can help Nashville return to the Stanley Cup Final as they did in 2017 with a certain P.K. Subban.
