A Canadiens' prospect could become a real steal for the organization

There is no doubt that the Montreal Canadiens' defense is headed for a very promising future in the coming years. Indeed, several young players such as Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj, and Justin Barron had excellent starts in the NHL last season, and many quality prospects should join this group very soon.

Among them are notably David Reinbacher, Logan Mailloux, Lane Hutson, and possibly William Trudeau. However, a 19-year-old Swedish defenseman could certainly shake up the management's cards in a few seasons. This refers to the Rogle BK's defenseman in the SweHL, Adam Engstrom, who was selected in the third round during the 2022 Draft.

Present at the Montreal Canadiens' development camp held at the beginning of July, Engstrom demonstrated the full extent of his talent. Possessing an excellent stride, the defenseman also has an exceptional vision of the game, making him a constant threat in offensive territory.

Starting the 2022-2023 year in junior ranks in Sweden, the Tricolore's prospect played only seven games before being promoted to the first division. A well-deserved honor considering the defenseman scored an impressive total of four goals and nine assists (13 points) during this stint.

Despite his young age, Adam Engstrom quickly made a name for himself against men in Sweden's top league, becoming indispensable for his coach. His ability to create scoring opportunities earned him a spot in the top two power-play units of his team. In 43 games, the 6-foot defenseman amassed a total of six goals and 10 assists (16 points), also adding five points in nine playoff games.

"In 2022-23, Engstrom's play went to another level, and the young defenseman showed that he had a very high IQ. His smooth skating greatly helped him carry the puck easily in transition. Moreover, his ability to find his teammates with precise passes fuels his offensive game. Adam Engstrom will return to Europe this season, but it will be very interesting to follow his progression, as he could potentially earn a spot with the Montreal Canadiens in 2024-2025. One thing's for sure, the Tricolore has an excellent pool of defensive prospects, and fans can be excited about the club's future.
