Trade between the Golden Knights and the Canadiens for Nick Suzuki: New information emerging
A little over five years ago, the Canadiens, under Marc Bergevin, acquired Nick Suzuki, a second-round pick, and Tomas Tatar in exchange for Max Pacioretty. While this trade has not aged well for the Golden Knights, they still managed to win the Stanley Cup.
As we know, Suzuki is now the team's captain and best player, while Pacioretty was essentially given to the Hurricanes.
However, this trade, although heavily won by the Canadiens, allowed the Golden Knights to make another trade that, in turn, helped them win the Stanley Cup.
According to new information from Arpon Basu, neither Suzuki nor Cody Glass were the players initially targeted by Bergevin:
"The Canadiens definitely wanted a top prospect, but it wasn't necessarily Suzuki that they coveted. It was the young left-handed offensive defenseman Erik Brannstrom that they had in mind, as it was a significant organizational need while Victor Mete was playing on a pair with Shea Weber. They also made an attempt with Cody Glass.
However, the Canadiens ultimately agreed to receive any of the three first-round picks from the Golden Knights in 2017 and let the Knights choose between Glass (6th overall), Suzuki (13th overall), or Brannstrom (15th overall) to complete the deal, hoping it would be Brannstrom. Vegas decided that Glass was untouchable and eventually traded Brannstrom to the Senators a few months later in the Mark Stone trade. The Knights had doubts about Suzuki's ability to produce at a high level, and he was ultimately the one they sacrificed." Both teams have ultimately benefited from this trade. Erik Brannstrom was part of the deal that sent Golden Knights' captain Mark Stone to Vegas, and he played a crucial role in their Stanley Cup victory.
For the Canadiens, Nick Suzuki is undoubtedly the best of the three players, although the other two are not without their merits.
For a long time, it was believed that Cody Glass was the target for Marc Bergevin. We now know that this was not necessarily the case.
