Wow: Phillip Danault opens up and reflects on his decision to leave the Montreal Canadiens
Former Canadiens forward, Phillip Danault, quickly became a favorite among Montreal fans upon his arrival with the organization. Indeed, the Quebecer played a major role with the Habs, especially during the team's journey through the 2021 playoffs.
Capable of facing the best opposing trios night after night, the centerman from Victoriaville also showcased his offensive skills, harvesting a 53-point season in his fourth year with the Canadiens.
Unfortunately, to the great dismay of the fans, Marc Bergevin chose to offer a six-season contract extension to forward Brendan Gallagher rather than bringing Phillip Danault back with the team in 2021-2022.
A decision that aged particularly poorly as Gally struggles to find success in the NHL. For his part, Danault reached the 50-point plateau in his two seasons with the Los Angeles Kings.
Moreover, in a recent column written by the 30-year-old forward, Danault admitted that he was very happy under the Californian sun, conceding that he still misses the passion of the Montreal Canadiens fans.
"I like it because it's easier to disconnect. But on the other hand, the passionate side in Montreal, it's really incredible. I was born into it, I come from Victoriaville. Hockey was religious at our house, so I always understood the passion of the Canadiens fans. But I like seeing the other side of the coin here, disconnecting, living my quiet life with my family, not being afraid to go out if we play less well here, we really go unnoticed. It's very, very rare that I get recognized." - Phillip Danault
One thing is for sure, we strongly hope that he will continue to flourish in the Kings' uniform. He will certainly remain a highly appreciated player in Montreal, who allowed us to experience incredible emotions in the summer of 2021.
Selected 26th in the 2011 draft, Phillip Danault will begin his third season with Los Angeles. Known for his excellence at both ends of the rink, the former number 24 of the Habs has scored 100 goals and 205 assists (305 points) in 555 games in the NHL.
