Retirement over, and a return to the game for Patrice Bergeron? Did Brad Marchand just reveal a scoop?
For a professional athlete, the cliché is that one should retire at the right moment, while at the peak of their career. For Patrice Bergeron, it can be said that he succeeded.
The forward won his 6th Selke Trophy in his last season, and he likely could have continued to offer great hockey, but he listened to his body and chose retirement.
It was a difficult decision for him, but he is at peace with it, according to an interview he gave a few weeks ago. However, the pressure might be getting to him.
His former teammate and the new captain of the Bruins, Brad Marchand, is persistently urging Bergeron to come back for the playoffs.
"The Boston Bruins are doing just fine without Patrice Bergeron, but Brad Marchand would like to see his old companion back on the ice."
For the playoffs, the Bruins will certainly need a center of Bergeron's caliber. Will the former number 37 succumb to the pressure?
"Bergy [Bergeron], I think he's annoyed by how many times I push him to come back. He's excited about what's coming." - Marchand
The two friends still talk every day. If Bergeron decides to come back for the playoffs, the team will have until March 8th to sign him, or he won't be able to participate in the postseason.
It's clear that the temptation is strong. The Bruins are having an excellent season, against all odds. Despite losing their two top centers, success is still within reach. That could definitely weigh heavily in a potential return to play for Bergy.
