The Oilers had to make a move to clear cap space, and they completed a trade late last night to do so.

Defenseman Cody Ceci is now on his way to San Jose, along with a 2025 third-round pick, in exchange for defenseman Ty Emberson.

Cody Ceci's name had been circulating a lot in the past week, as Stan Bowman needed to free up cap space to match the two offer sheets submitted for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway, while also ensuring the team remains a Stanley Cup contender.

Cody Ceci goes from a team that came within one goal of lifting the trophy to a bottom-ranked team that will likely remain in that position for several years.

Oilers trade: bad news for Leon Draisaitl

The German forward loses his best friend in this trade. He and Cody Ceci are very close, but that's part of the business.

Let's hope for the Oilers that this doesn't make Draisaitl want to explore other options next summer when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
