Return home for Phillip Danault: major statement
Phillip Danault has never hidden his love for the Canadiens, but unfortunately, despite being at home, contract negotiations took him out of Montreal.
Indeed, we never fully understood what happened, but one thing is clear: if Marc Bergevin had shown him more consideration, he would likely still be with the Habs.
Now with the Kings, Phillip Danault seems to be living the perfect happiness, but his role in the top 6 is coming to an end, and he will quickly find himself on the 3rd linesomething he did not want in Montreal.
After all, this may be his role on a good team, and he must accept it if he hopes to win someday.
Danault is a very good hockey player, especially on the defensive side. While not being a top-tier offensive player, he does not fit the profile of a top 6 forward in terms of offensive production.
Return home for Phillip Danault?
According to The Athletic, the Kings are at a crossroads, and if they were to miss the playoffs this year, a rebuild could be on the horizon.
"Kopitar plans to end his career as a King, but are there discussions with players like Doughty and Phillip Danault to see if they would prefer to finish their contract with a team closer to the Stanley Cup? The rise in the salary cap could make Danault a bit easier to move. The $11 million cap hit for Doughty, which also extends to 2026-2027, will not be easy to move in all scenarios." - Eric Stephens
Players like Danault and Doughty might then request to leave to win elsewhere or could simply be sacrificed by the Kings' GM.
The Canadiens will be a much better team each year moving forward, and returning home, with a different management team, would therefore be a great opportunity for Danault.
Once again, the center would need to accept that his role would be in the top 9.
