The majority of experts agree that David Reinbacher has made significant progress since the start of training camp. Indeed, the fifth overall pick in the last draft seems more confident in his abilities, which is reflected in his increasingly dominant performances on the ice.
However, during his appearance on BPM Sports radio, Mathias Brunet compared the Tricolore's prospect to a particular defenseman, which apparently did not sit well with Montreal fans. According to him, Reinbacher's playing style is much more akin to Calgary Flames' defenseman Rasmus Andersson than to Roman Josi.
"After the first three overall picks, the quality drops. Look at the 5th overall pick from the last 25 drafts. We always think we're going to get a Cale Makar every year. Reinbacher will be a good defenseman, but don't expect 75 points from him. Even better if he beats the odds! I thought the comparison with Roman Josi was not realistic." - Mathias Brunet Although the 26-year-old defenseman has nearly reached the 50-point mark (49 this season) over the past two years, he hasn't been a standout since his NHL debut. While these are impressive stats, everyone agrees that his contribution is nowhere near Roman Josi's, who is undoubtedly one of the best defensemen in the league.
So should Tricolore fans lower their expectations for the 18-year-old?
Yet, despite his young age, David Reinbacher was clearly able to keep up with the CH players during intra-team matches. Furthermore, his 22 points in his draft year, compared to only 8 for Josi, suggest that the defenseman could bring valuable offensive contributions in the coming years, given his incredible potential.
One thing's for sure, we'll be closely monitoring his progress throughout the season and even in the upcoming years, hoping he can develop as a true blue line general for the Canadiens, just like Roman Josi does for the Predators.
