While these aren't reports from reputable journalists, these discussions fuel debates and allow different viewpoints of the Canadiens fans to be observed.
The Twitter account Hockey Night In Montreal suggested a monster trade proposal between the Montreal Canadiens and the St. Louis Blues that involves a promising young goalie and several draft picks.
Despite a difficult season for the Canadiens, Samuel Montembeault had an excellent season and showed he could take on a bigger role in the Canadiens' net. The Quebecer was particularly impressive during the World Championship, helping the Canadian team win the gold medal.
Despite the prowess of the 26-year-old goaltender, there are still some doubts about the possibility of him becoming a true number one in the NHL. That being said, Kent Hughes must absolutely continue to look for a goalie of the future for the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, whether by trade or in the next draft.
The general manager of the Canadiens might therefore be interested in acquiring 22-year-old Joel Hofer. The 6'5" goaltender was sparkling when the Blues called upon his services this season, posting a 3-1-1 record. He also maintained an efficiency rate of 0.921 with the Springfield Thunderbirds in 47 AHL games in 2022-2023.
Here is the complete trade proposal:
TO MONTREAL:
- Joel Hofer
- The 10th overall pick this year
TO ST. LOUIS:
- The Panthers' first-round pick (31st or 32nd)
- The Flames' first-round pick next year
- The 37th overall pick this year
- A third-round pick
On one hand, the Canadiens could get a very promising goaltender who could potentially become a number one in a few seasons, plus a second top-10 pick in this year's draft. Kent Hughes could therefore add a very talented prospect to his lineup by selecting a player such as Zach Benson, Gabriel Perreault, David Reinbacher, Brayden Yager, Oliver Moore, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, and Colby Barlow, for example.
However, the Canadiens would have to give up numerous draft picks to the St. Louis Blues (2 first-round picks, a second-round pick, and a third-round pick). It's hard to have a fixed viewpoint on this proposal, as the Calgary Flames' pick could become very interesting next year. However, it could also be a late pick, as was notably the case with the Panthers' pick.
