A team makes the Canadiens look like geniuses after an absolutely disastrous draft
We have a lot of difficulty appreciating the work of the Montreal Canadiens during the draft, given the lack of notable success the organization experienced between 2009 and 2018.
Although the draft is unpredictable, there are still teams that manage to stand out better than others.
While since 2019, the Canadiens seem to have made more successful selections, thus filling their prospect pool with promising young talents such as Cole Caufield, Kaiden Guhle, Sean Farrell, Logan Mailloux, Joshua Roy, Owen Beck, Lane Hutson, Adam Engstrom, and several others, the nearly 10-year drought severely hurt the team's ongoing success.
However, the CH does not take the honor of the worst draft performance in recent years, as the Philadelphia Flyers have had one of the most disastrous crops, considering the choices they could have made.
If the 2017 draft was a grand slam for the Dallas Stars with three home runs in three attempts, it was quite the opposite for the Flyers.
Here is the nomenclature of the first three selections of the two teams:
- With the 2nd overall pick, the Flyers selected forward Nolan Patrick, allowing the Stars to then select star defenseman Miro Heiskanen, 3rd overall. We could even add Cale Makar, who followed next.
- With the 27th overall pick, the Flyers had to settle for selecting forward Morgan Frost, who is not a bad choice, but the organization saw these same Stars conclude a last-minute trade to acquire the 26th pick, just before their choice, to steal star goalie, Jake Oettinger.
- Finally, with the 35th overall pick, Philadelphia chose forward Isaac Ratcliffe, while the Stars got their hands on a young offensive star in Jason Robertson, just four ranks later. Dallas thus secured an elite forward and defenseman, as well as a number one goalie, in three selections, while the Flyers only have Morgan Frost to show for it, a forward who has just blossomed but will never be a top-level attacker in the NHL.
Let's just say that for Canadiens fans, when we compare ourselves, we can sometimes take consolation!
