Alexis Lafrenière in Montreal: A Trade Proposal Surfaces and a Former CH Employee Responds
Former Montreal Canadiens employee Marc Dumont, who has become a columnist for the Montreal Hockey Now site, answered a fan question about the potential acquisition of Alexis Lafrenière.
Here is the proposal in question:
"Would you trade the Montreal Canadiens' 2024 first-round pick (top 5 protected) for Alexis Lafrenière?"
Dumont did not hesitate for a second, turning down this trade offer. Here's why he would decline the proposal:
"Absolutely not. There are already too many reclamation projects currently at the Montreal Canadiens, and I am not sure that Lafrenière still has elite potential at this stage.
I would keep the pick and use it to acquire younger players with higher potential." - Marc Dumont
I completely agree with Dumont on this trade, the Canadiens would have more to lose than to gain by paying such a price for the 21-year-old Quebecer.
All signs indicate that the Tricolore will face another season in the bottom tier of the league, which means the first-round pick is likely to be in the top 10 of the next draft.
Moreover, although Lafrenière could bloom in the coming years, his style of play and his position as a left winger do not meet the immediate needs of the organization.
The Canadiens need at least one elite forward who can become a point-per-game scorer and the Rangers' number 13 no longer seems to have that potential.
I believe that if the CH were to acquire Lafrenière, we would repeat the mistake of Jonathan Drouin, as the young man is likely not to be able to handle the Montreal pressure to produce every game.
And you, would you trade the Montreal Canadiens' 2024 first-round pick (top 5 protected) for Alexis Lafrenière?
