Everyone agrees that the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, made a big splash last summer by acquiring Sean Monahan and a first-round pick in return for future considerations. Moreover, according to numerous reports, a similar opportunity could present itself to the Canadiens in the coming days.

Indeed, the Ottawa Senators find themselves in a difficult situation currently, having no room under the salary cap to offer a new deal to the young Shane Pinto. Pierre Dorion is thus desperately trying to shed the contract of Quebecer forward, Mathieu Joseph, who is drawing a salary of 2.9 million dollars for the next three seasons.

However, according to information shared by Anthony Di Marco, the price to pay to get rid of the 26-year-old right winger would either be a first-round pick or a top prospect. This could certainly represent an excellent opportunity for the Habs to continue to enhance the team's prospect pool.

It remains to be seen whether Kent Hughes will want to get involved in this matter. One thing is certain, the Montreal Canadiens are among the few teams that have the necessary space under the salary cap to afford to absorb such a contract. However, the fact that Joseph is signed for another three seasons might cool the general manager's enthusiasm.

"As Ottawa looks to free up cap space, they have continued to explore options to trade Mathieu Joseph's contract and the 3 years ($2.95 million AAV) remaining on it.

According to multiple league sources, it will take a first-round pick or an equivalent prospect to do it." - Anthony Di Marco

Selected in the 4th round during the 2015 draft, Mathieu Joseph has accumulated 44 goals and 56 assists (100 points) in 288 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Ottawa Senators since he joined the NHL.

This will be a case to watch closely as Pierre Dorion will surely want to resolve this situation quickly to sign his forward before the end of training camp.
