Yesterday, important information surfaced revealing that the Columbus Blue Jackets could pass on Michkov in the draft, even though they will likely have the opportunity to select him before the Habs. Indeed, Columbus seems to prefer Will Smith. But that's not all!
According to the highly respected Aaron Portzline, relayed by Tony Marinaro on his podcast, a major new development is circulating : Matvei Michkov and the Montreal Canadiens could be getting closer.
Aaron Portzline says that if Columbus indeed drafts fourth overall, they will select Will Smith (and not Matvei Michkov). If the Canadiens draft next, they will select Matvei Michkov.
He adds that the person who has a big say on the player that the Habs will draft in June, Nick Bobrov, loves Michkov so much that he would call him (behind the scenes) the European Connor Bedard.
This would be an incredible scenario, even if the Montreal Canadiens were to lose the lottery, they could still acquire a generational talent. We are crossing our fingers that the Blue Jackets do not win the lottery and that this comes to fruition.
In any case, it is major news to know that the Habs are now very interested in Michkov, which represents a turnaround from some of the rumors that were circulating.
