Frank Seravalli has revealed very important information regarding the intentions of Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin. Indeed, he is said to have contacted several GM's to inform them that forward Conor Garland is available on the trade market, and for FREE.
The Canucks find themselves in a precarious situation ahead of next season and absolutely need to free up money under the salary cap. Patrik Allvin would therefore like to get rid of Conor Garland's contract, which pays him $4.95 million through 2026.
Here's what a trade involving Garland could look like:
TO MONTREAL:
- Conor Garland
TO VANCOUVER:
- Future considerations
However, according to Frank Seravalli, teams would not be inclined to accept Conor Garland's hefty contract without receiving compensation such as draft picks or quality prospects.
"The Canucks are in salary cap jail and they know it. The rest of their summer plans cannot be enacted until they free up salary cap space, and they've been actively checking prices on Garland as their preference to move to alleviate their cap concerns. Garland, who played for Rick Tocchet in Arizona, is a scrappy but undersized winger who has struggled to find a comfortable fit in the Lower Mainland. With three years left at nearly $5 million, will a team take a flier? He's essentially a free asset, as the Canucks have found teams that are asking for assets in return to take him off their hands." - Frank Seravalli
The Canucks may therefore have to do as the Calgary Flames did in the trade involving Sean Monahan by adding a first-round pick to entice general managers to accept the trade.
27-year-old Conor Garland recorded 17 goals and 29 assists in 81 games this year, after notably amassing 52 points in 77 matches the previous season.
Should Kent Hughes accept such a trade even if there are three years left on the American forward's contract?
One thing is certain, this will be a case to closely follow in the coming weeks!
