In Engels' view, an experienced right-handed defenseman like Savard, who is solid defensively and can bring an interesting offensive touch, would have great value on the market, particularly for a team contending for top honors.
Moreover, due to his very honest agreement of $3.5M valid until the 2024-2025 season, the Quebecer could attract the attention of teams that do not have much cap space, especially if the Canadiens retain some of his salary.
Considering that number 58 from the Habs will be 33 at the start of the next campaign, and the fact that he will no longer be part of the organization when the team becomes a Stanley Cup contender again, there is indeed a possibility to see him become a very interesting piece for a trade.
However, Engels specifies that the club would have to be well behind in the playoff race for Kent Hughes to seriously consider offers.
I would also add that the emergence of young defenders within the organization could encourage management to make a decision on his case, especially if the offers become attractive for the Habs by the next trade deadline.
However, it should be noted that Savard is an excellent leader and an ideal mentor for several young defenders in the organization. It is plausible that Hughes decides that it is better for his team's development to keep his services, especially if his market value does not attract the desired offers for him.
