Many were disappointed to learn that Joshua Roy was quickly cut from the team's training camp, despite impressive performances during the preseason games.
The 20-year-old showed a lot of promise on the ice, suggesting that he certainly has a bright future in the NHL in the coming years.
However, it might not take years, but just months before Roy makes the leap to the big league. In fact, journalist Renaud Lavoie stated during a recent appearance on BPM Sports that Roy would play games with the Canadiens as early as this season.
Lavoie even claims that the Canadiens will «need» the 2021 fifth-round pick at some point during the campaign. This speaks volumes about what the young man has to offer the Habs, even though he's a rookie in professional hockey.
The TVA Sports reporter suggested he was very close to convincing the team's management.
I would argue that the surplus of forwards and the lack of space in the team's top-9 definitely worked against Roy. Moreover, the Canadiens aren't in a rush to promote the Sherbrooke Phoenix product to the NHL too quickly.
He can adjust to professional hockey at his own pace in the AHL, with a promising young squad at the Laval Rocket. He's likely to have a prominent role in the offense under head coach Jean-François Houle.
We're eager to see his progression throughout the next season.
