Cayden Primeau is about to play one of the most important games of his career with the Laval Rocket, and his future within the Montreal Canadiens organization could be determined soon. After being written off by some, Primeau shone at the end of the season in the American Hockey League.
He is currently playing his last games before the big decision is made next fall. It is important to note that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton will have to make an important decision about his future next season.
The first option is to keep Primeau with the Canadiens. The second is to place him on waivers in the NHL.
According to Charles-Alexis Brisebois, there may be a solution to extend the tryout and avoid option two. This would be a first for the Habs in a long time, but it is possible that the team will start the 2023-24 season with three goaltenders, according to Eric Engels of Sportsnet.
Indeed, the Habs will have three goaltenders under contract next year (Jake Allen, Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau), and they cannot be sent to the Rocket without passing through waivers.
