It is now confirmed for Arber Xhekaj with the Montreal Canadiens
For many fans who don't necessarily follow all the minor details of the Montreal Canadiens, some were surprised to learn that defenseman Arber Xhekaj had been sent to the Laval Rocket.
To clarify the situation, know that this kind of move is only theoretical, a "paper transaction" as it's called, while the number 72 isn't really sent to the Canadiens' farm team.
In fact, it's to comply with NHL limits regarding the salary cap and the maximum number of 23 player contracts.
The one who is a crowd favorite will not play any games in the AHL this season; he will simply be recalled by the team after a 24-hour period following his assignment.
This strategy has just been confirmed by journalist Marc-Antoine Godin from Radio-Canada. It allowed for maximum salary cap management for the organization.
"On paper, the Canadiens have sent Arber Xhekaj to the Rocket in addition to keeping Joel Armia in their lineup to maximize their salary cap and the money they can reuse from the long-term injured list.
This changes nothing to the fact that Xhekaj will play with the Habs."
Marc-Antoine Godin Xhekaj will therefore be in uniform for the first game of the season tomorrow, to face off against the Maple Leafs, in Toronto.
Before everyone freaks out, Xhekaj, like last year, is being sent down as a paper move.
It's to get the Canadiens as close to $4.5M over the cap with Dvorak on LTIR.
Because Xhekaj doesn't have performance bonuses, he was the obvious individual to paper.
