Joshua Roy is already a victim of Gary Bettman after his first game
Joshua Roy could finally live his dream in a big way this Saturday night. Not only was he playing his first NHL game, but he was doing it in the uniform of his childhood team, in front of around thirty friends and family members at the Bell Centre on a Saturday night.
Like any rookie, Roy had his ceremonial lap during the warm-up, and he did it without a helmet, as several others have done.
The rule is clear: players entering the league in recent years must wear a helmet during the warm-up period, but rookies still decide not to. Connor Bedard had done the same thing at the beginning of the season.
Gary Bettman and the NHL will thus send a fine of $2,500 to Joshua for this reason. According to the veterans, who are probably volunteering to foot the bill, it's a unique moment; it only happens once to have your ceremonial lap. The fine is worth it.
