The Matvei Michkov case has been generating a lot of buzz in recent days. Now even more so, as there is a good chance that the young man may slip to the 5th pick of the Canadiens, despite his immense talent comparable to that of Connor Bedard.
In connection with this young Russian phenomenon, Marco Normandin of HabsolumentFan.com reported the comments of the Canadiens' radio game announcer, Martin McGuire, about the very mysterious death of his father recently.
Here's a reminder of the troubling facts:
Michkov's father left his home to go to the convenience store after watching a hockey game with his son Matvei, and he never returned.
"Michkov Sr. simply told his son he was going to run errands and would be back in 20 minutes, but he never came back."
To make matters worse, young Michkov reportedly received a mysterious and unclear phone call in the meantime. He couldn't understand the caller as they were too far from the device.
Michkov Sr. was eventually found dead in a pond. He was 51 years old.
New major details have surfaced, and here's what McGuire said on 98.5 FM about the tragic death of Michkov's father.
"Obviously, getting stories confirmed when it comes from Russia, you'll understand that it's difficult. But apparently, his father was trying to invalidate the contract. His father's wish would have been to send him to North America quickly. That's why this story will be a bit 'touchy' because we don't know if the young man will have to respect the contract he would have signed because no one can clearly say if he really signed that contract and if it's really 2 years, 3 years, 4 years on that contract. That's what's a little bit annoying in his case." - Martin McGuire
Wow! That's a huge revelation, as his father wanted to cancel his KHL contract so that his son could move to North America more quickly. Of course, we're not explicitly stating that something happened to him because of this, but the circumstances are very troubling.
One thing is certain now, Michkov's intention is to come and play in the NHL, and this story clearly demonstrates it. So it's understandable that this is a very complex case.
