Major turn of events regarding the transaction canceled by Gary Bettman: the trade will officially be confirmed and Tony DeAngelo will become a member of the Hurricanes
Over the past few days, the NHL has made a somewhat controversial decision by using its veto right to cancel a trade involving Tony DeAngelo.
The decision was reportedly motivated by the fact that this was the second time in less than a year that the Philadelphia Flyers and the Carolina Hurricanes were trading the defender. Gary Bettman and his team therefore implied that both teams were trying to circumvent the salary cap rules.
"The NHL has interrupted the transaction to prevent DeAngelo from returning to Carolina because they believe the Hurricanes are trying to circumvent the league's salary cap rules.
The NHL has challenged the fact that DeAngelo was traded in the same year following the original trade, with a salary retention on top. The Flyers and the Hurricanes argue that this doesn't matter since the contract was signed by the Philadelphia Flyers' general manager."
However, all indications are that the trade will eventually take place, and Tony DeAngelo will indeed be a player for the Hurricanes next season. The defender racked up a total of 11 goals and 31 assists in 70 games last season, as well as 51 points in 64 games with the Hurricanes in 2021-2022.
Wow! What a complicated story!
"Tony DeAngelo will still be traded to Carolina. Don Waddell confirmed that an agreement remains in place with Daniel Brière and will have to wait until after July 7th.
The Flyers would receive a prospect and retain 50% of DeAngelo's salary. "
We can therefore expect the transaction to be officially confirmed in the coming days.
