Montreal Canadiens: Samuel Montembeault's next contract would be known
Samuel Montembeault wants to stay in Montreal. He has the Canadiens tattooed on his heart, and he feels at home here. However, he won't stay at a salary of 1 million per year given the performances he's delivering, that's understood.
According to Réjean Tremblay's report, the Montembeault camp's demands are around 4 million per year, slightly more than Jake Allen. For a potential future number one goaltender, this makes a lot of sense.
Analysts agree that a three-year contract would be ideal, so it's reasonable to believe that his next deal will be around 12 million, whether he stays here or gets traded.
This is where all the questions start to clear up. Does the Canadiens see Montembeault as a number one goalie?
"But the real question is much more crucial. Do Jeff Gordon and Kent Hughes believe that Samuel Montembeault can be a number one? As simple as that. And if they think otherwise, then expect Montembeault to be traded in the coming months."
Réjean Tremblay
The Canadiens certainly won't pay a goalie 4 million without intending to have him guard the net for more than 20 or 30 games.
As Stéphane Fiset mentioned on L'Antichambre, if the Canadiens want to determine if Montembeault has the potential to be a starting goalie, he will have to play 4-5 games, take a rest, then another sequence. In short, he needs to be tested, which is far from the current situation.
One thing is certain, Monty has been playing solid hockey for a year, and many would love to see him have this opportunity with the Canadiens.
