With just a little over $2.2 million available under the salary cap, it seems that the Rangers will need to work some magic to reach an agreement with their young player or create the necessary space internally by trading a big contract.
However, due to the complex situation the Rangers are currently navigating, the possibility of an offer sheet from another team has emerged.
In fact, Max Miller, a journalist covering the Sharks for The Hockey News, raised the possibility of San Jose making a bold move by submitting an offer sheet to Lafrenière, possibly after they free up some or all of Erik Karlsson's contract.
If the Sharks were to offer Lafrenière less than $4.29 million, they would only need to give up a second-round draft pick in the upcoming draft as compensation.
Since the Sharks must keep their first-round pick for next year, as they are projected to finish in the lower third of the league in 2024, giving up a second-round pick seems very feasible.
In truth, it could be a home run from the team's GM, Mike Grier.
In 81 games this season, the first overall pick in the 2020 draft scored 16 goals and 39 points. His breakthrough in the NHL is still anticipated, and a change of scenery could greatly benefit him.
This will be a major story to watch in the coming weeks.
