It seems that you are aware of the difficult situation the Toronto Maple Leafs are facing. The team's goaltenders are dealing with injuries and they have been forced to rely on emergency goalies to replace them over the past few weeks.
This situation is far from ideal and in each game, the team has to rely on emergency goalies, sometimes amateurs, to deal with this critical situation. This was notably seen during the game against the Montreal Canadiens.
In the final minutes, the Toronto Maple Leafs organization announced the emergency recall of a goalie (EBUG), but there seems to be a significant obstacle.
«Erik Kallgren is eligible to serve as the Leafs' EBUG tonight due to a change in NHL policy allowing a professional goaltender to serve in that role, according to Sheldon Keefe.» - Chris Johnston
In short, to prevent amateur goalies or Zamboni drivers from ending up in teams' nets during the NHL playoffs, the rules have been modified.
This situation is very beneficial for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but it remains quite unusual. Instead of an amateur emergency goalie, the team is allowed to recall a professional emergency goalie. In this case, the goalie in question is Erik Kallgren, aged 26 and having played 24 games this season in the AHL with a record of 10-9-2, an average of 3.26, and a save percentage of .883.
Tonight, the Maple Leafs duo will therefore consist of Kallgren and Ilya Samsonov to face the Tampa Bay Lightning.
