Essentially, in this trade, two undesirable contracts are passed on in Rem Pitlick, but especially Mike Hoffman. Thus, Hughes simultaneously freed two spots in his roster among the twelve available forward positions in October. There is also the return of Jeff Petry with a very significant salary retention that is part of the package.
In connection with this big move by the Canadiens, major information surfaced behind the scenes of this transaction, as we learned, thanks to Renaud Lavoie, that Pitlick had requested a trade from his general manager.
The latter possibly sensed the heat of a possible demotion to Laval, given the significant number of forwards in the current club's lineup. Thus, by managing to pass on Pitlick in the trade, Hughes freed a problem and he also got his hands on an interesting return, rather than leaving things as they are and possibly ending up losing him for nothing in waivers next October.
Thanks to the departures of Hoffman and Pitlick, it greatly helps the congestion in the team's attack, as the team now has 13 players to battle for a spot among the twelve regular forwards, in addition to Jesse Ylonen, who is likely to start the year in Laval, even though he will have to go through waivers at the beginning of the season.
