Now, several days later, even though some anticipated another trade involving one of the two new acquisitions in the near future, there's still no news from the Habs.
So, there are still three NHL-contracted goaltenders on the team roster: Jake Allen, Samuel Montembeault, and DeSmith.
Since the announcement of this significant personnel move, there's been a lot of speculations regarding which of the three goaltenders will leave the team in the coming weeks.
Montembeault, Allen, and DeSmith have been subjects of rumors, but a recent statement sheds light on a certainty within the Canadiens.
During the Pro-Am Gagné-Bergeron event held at the Centre Vidéotron in Quebec City, Monty revealed important information about Kent Hughes and the Canadiens.
This couldn't be clearer: the 26-year-old Québécois is in Montreal to stay.
Given that both DeSmith and Allen can serve as backups to Monty, we can infer that Hughes' plan might be to potentially trade the goaltender with the higher market value among the two veterans.
In my opinion, considering market value, it's likely that DeSmith is more inclined to leave the organization. He has a better contract than Allen and represents a less risky investment. Moreover, the former Penguin has displayed significantly stronger performances over the past few seasons.
