Significant information about Cayden Primeau's future with the Canadiens: Darren Dreger claims that his days in Montreal could be numbered
During the second intermission of the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, the excellent Darren Dreger revealed major information on TSN concerning the future of Cayden Primeau. Indeed, he claimes that the 24-year-old goaltender will be claimed by another NHL team if he is placed on waivers before the start of the season.
Wow! We really didn't expect that, honestly!
He also added that the Canadiens' management might have to keep three goaltenders on their roster to ensure they retain young Primeau's services. This situation is clearly not ideal as the Canadiens already have 15 forwards and 9 defensemen under contract. Will Jesse Ylonen or Justin Barron be forced to go to the Laval Rocket?
"Darren Dreger, during TSN's intermission show, discussing the Canadiens' goaltending situation at camp, said that 'what is being said in Montreal is that Cayden Primeau will be claimed off waivers' if he's placed there.
It's assumed that the Canadiens might keep three goalies to start the year. (Primeau, Allen, and Montembeault)" - Via HabsLink
Kent Hughes will therefore face a tough decision concerning Cayden Primeau, but also regarding some young players pushing to start the season with the big team.
Of course, unless there's an injury, Samuel Montembeault and Jake Allen should be the only goaltenders to see action this season. Knowing that Cayden Primeau needs to play games to regain his confidence, would it really be beneficial for his development to keep him in the Bell Centre stands?
One thing is certain, this will be something to watch closely over the next few days!
