The General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens is currently very active on the trade market. Kent Hughes is strongly looking to make a big move ahead of the upcoming draft, as he has already had discussions with both the Ducks and Sharks for their second and fourth overall picks respectively.

Obviously, the price paid would likely be quite hefty, even if the Canadiens include their fifth pick in the trade. However, according to Sportsnet's reporter Eric Engels, Hughes is also considering the option of dropping back in the draft, taking advantage of Matvei Michkov's value to boost a favorable transaction for the Tricolore.

"It is being said that it is just as likely, if not more so, to see the Canadiens dropping back in the first round." - Eric Engels

According to Engels, he also believes that if the Canadiens moves up in the draft, it would be for the 4th pick in order to choose a centre, likely Will Smith, whereas if they move down they would be targeting a forward or a defenseman.

This implies that the Canadiens will not be selecting the Russian phenom, as they attempt to avoid having to make a difficult decision concerning him.
