It's now confirmed! The Highway 50 that passes through Thurso, the hometown of the former Canadiens star, will be renamed Guy-Lafleur Highway.
François Legault will go to the town hall of the municipality on May 4th to make the announcement of this wonderful news aimed at paying tribute to one of the most electrifying players to have worn the Montreal Canadiens uniform.
Guy's mother, Pierrette Lafleur, was particularly honored to learn this news:
"I was surprised when I received the call. I thought, oh, my sweet, already? I didn't think I'd see this in my lifetime, I'm 91 years old [laughs]! It's an honor! It's beautiful for the family, it's beautiful for everyone who loves Guy."
Having passed away on April 22, 2022 after a tough battle with cancer, Guy Lafleur left an indelible impression on millions of Quebecers with his prowess on the ice and his extraordinary personality.
In 1126 NHL games, the "blond demon" scored 560 goals and 793 assists, also winning the Stanley Cup five times.
