The acquisitions of Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook are concrete examples of his strategy to rejuvenate the Canadiens' lineup, while also giving a second chance to players who have not yet reached their full potential.
However, the journalist at The Athletic, Arpon Basu, made a rather surprising statement during his appearance on BPM Sports.
Indeed, during his first column alongside Georges Laraque and Stéphane Gonzalez, Basu admitted that in his opinion, the best trade made by Kent Hughes is the one involving Shea Weber and the Vegas Golden Knights.
Let's recall that last June 16th, the Canadiens traded Shea Weber's contract in return for forward Evgeny Dadonov. A few months later, the general manager of the Canadiens traded the Russian in return for Denis Gurianov.
Although the two players have never managed to become essential elements in Martin St-Louis' lineup, Arpon Basu believes it's a great achievement to have been able to get rid of Shea Weber's hefty contract.
He mentions that this transaction has allowed the Canadiens to have much better financial flexibility, which could potentially result in the signing of high-profile free agents in the coming years.
One thing is certain, Kent Hughes has shown that he is an excellent negotiator when it comes to offering new contracts to his players. Having been an agent for several seasons, he clearly knows how to manage the salary cap, and that's very promising for the future of the Canadiens.
