In connection with the rumors currently circulating, an excellent trade proposal has been brought up by my colleague William Nadeau from Habs et LNH.
According to what was recently suggested by Elliotte Friedman and further mentioned by a journalist covering the Philadelphia Flyers, the Leafs are still interested in acquiring the young goaltender, Carter Hart.
The organization is currently nearly $9 million over the salary cap, and goaltender Sergei Samsonov is still without a contract. However, they will benefit from a $5.6 million relief at the beginning of the season by placing Jake Muzzin on long-term injured reserve.
Having very little maneuvering room under the salary cap, even with Muzzin's exception, Toronto absolutely must offload a significant contract from their roster, and the most likely name to be traded is goaltender Matt Murray.
This is where the Canadiens come into play with their $7 million cap space. Kent Hughes has already stated his openness to using this space to acquire future assets, as he did last summer when acquiring a first-round pick along with Sean Monahan's contract.
Considering that the GM of the Calgary Flames, with whom Kent Hughes completed that trade last year, Brad Treliving, is now the GM of the Leafs, there is a highly interesting connection between the two executives.
Taking into account Treliving's strong desire to get rid of Murray to sign Samsonov and acquire Carter Hart, there is a possibility of building a trade between the Canadiens and the Leafs that would relieve several million for the latter.
Considering the success of the Monahan trade, the Canadiens could seek to achieve the same home run as last year.
For the Canadiens, there is a possibility of trading Murray while retaining a portion of his salary, buying out his contract, or simply absorbing his final year's salary within the organization.
With the goal of acquiring another first-round pick, would you make this trade with the Maple Leafs?
