Although these trades involving seventh-round picks may not go down in history, they demonstrate the importance of taking each draft selection seriously. Indeed, the management of the Tricolore pulled off a true heist in this three-part transaction.
Trade #1:
In the 2017 draft, the Montreal Canadiens acquired the Flyers' seventh-round pick in exchange for their 2018 seventh-round pick, allowing the organization to select Cayden Primeau. Even though the goaltender has yet to secure a spot in the NHL, at only 23 years old, he could possibly become a backup in a few years.
Trade #2:
During the 2018 draft, the Tricolore's management decided to bring back their seventh-round pick by offering their 2019 seventh-round pick. The Canadiens set their sights on forward Brett Stapley who, despite a good season with the Trois-Rivières Lions this year, did not receive a contract extension.
Trade #3:
As you may have guessed, the Habs once again acquired their seventh-round pick in exchange for a selection one year later. However, the team's management struck a big deal by drafting Quebecer Rafaël Harvey-Pinard. Although the forward took a few seasons before making the leap to the NHL, all signs indicate that he will be an important asset in Martin St-Louis's lineup in 2023-2024, having scored 14 goals and 6 assists (20 points) in 34 games last year.
Wow!
Clearly, the Flyers' general manager deemed it unnecessary to select players in the seventh round. Meanwhile, the Montreal organization has added Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, Cayden Primeau, and Brett Stapley to its pool of prospects.
