Unhappy Canadiens Fans: Kent Hughes Hits a Home Run by Acquiring Two First-Round Picks for Sean Monahan
The least we can say is that the reactions following the Sean Monahan transaction were not as expected by Kent Hughes and the Canadiens.
People are referencing the Elias Lindholm trade to argue that the return is much less, and they are not wrong, but it's not the same situation.
It's true that Monahan and Lindholm are quite similar players. Same age, same build, same production, same role. However, injuries play a significant role with Monahan.
Not only has he missed a lot in recent years, but he has hardly participated in Canadiens' practices for about a month due to treatment days. That raises a red flag.
He represents a risk, and that's why Kent Hughes couldn't get more than a first-round pick. As for Lindholm, the reason the Flames traded him now is simple: the Canucks overpaid by a lot.
When you look at the big picture, Kent Hughes acquired two first-round picks (2024 and 2025) for having a good leader in his ranks for a year and a half. That's extraordinary.
"When it's all said and done, #GoHabsGo should end up with 2 first-round picks for Sean Monahan.
One to take him from #Flames, another one back for his play now.
Deep dive on the state of Monahan's game, potential suitors and recent trade comps."
It's exactly what happened, and you can add a conditionnal 3rd round pick in 2027.
