Upcoming trade of Jeff Petry: a recent trade proposal has just surfaced
Jeff Petry's return to Montreal is already fueling trade rumors. After all, the excellent journalist Eric Engels has stated that Kent Hughes is currently very active in trying to move his recent acquisition elsewhere.
Some believe that he will likely change teams again before the start of training camps. A few teams seem to be in the mix, including the Edmonton Oilers, possibly, as Maxim Lapierre points out.
"For a reasonable price, I don't see why the Oilers would pass up on Petry... if he's willing to go there, of course."
- Maxim Lapierre
In connection with the credible information circulating behind the scenes of the NHL, a potential trade proposal has surfaced in the context of negotiations between the Canadiens and the Oilers.
Here is the proposal raised:
TO THE OILERS:
Jeff Petry (25% of salary retained by the Habs)
7th round pick 2024
TO THE CANADIENS:
2nd round pick 2024 from Edmonton
Raphaël Lavoie
Considering the Canadiens would absorb Petry's salary for two seasons at around $2.3 million, is the return sufficient for the 35-year-old defenseman with the retention involved?
Although his performance has been less stellar in the past two seasons, it must be noted that a $2.3 million Petry is a real bargain. He played over 23 minutes on average this year and accumulated 31 points in 61 games.
Interest might have been non-existent at his full salary of $6.25 million, but with the salary cap reduction for both the Penguins and the Canadiens, at such a low salary impact, his value has skyrocketed.
